What Protective Gear Do Beginner Fighters Need?

If you're just starting out with kickboxing, boxing, or MMA, having the right protective gear is crucial—for your safety and that of your training partners. The correct equipment helps prevent injuries and gives you the confidence to train and spar effectively. Here's a breakdown of the most important gear you’ll need as a beginner.

1. Boxing Gloves

Boxing gloves are your essential starting point. They protect your hands, knuckles, and wrists during punches. Most beginners start with general-purpose gloves in 12 oz or 14 oz sizes, depending on your body weight. For more help, read: What size boxing gloves do I need?

Pro Tip: Choose gloves with sufficient padding and solid wrist support. Check out our full range of boxing gloves.

2. Hand Wraps or Inner Gloves

Hand wraps or inner gloves go under your boxing gloves to support your wrists and knuckles. They also absorb sweat and reduce the risk of sprains or fractures.

3. Shin Guards

If you’re practicing kickboxing or MMA, shin guards are essential. They protect your legs when kicking or blocking kicks. Beginners should opt for shin guards with thick padding and secure Velcro straps. See our Top 10 Shin Guards of 2025 for expert picks.

4. Mouthguard

A mouthguard protects your teeth and jaw during sparring. A good fit is crucial—make sure to choose a boil-and-bite model for a custom fit at home.

5. Groin Guard

Whether you’re male or female, a groin guard is vital for sparring and intense drills. It protects against accidental knees or kicks to the groin area.

6. Headgear (Optional but Recommended)

Headgear isn’t always required, but it's recommended for beginners, especially during sparring. It reduces the impact of punches and helps prevent cuts. Choose lightweight headgear that offers a clear field of vision. See our guide: How to choose the right headgear size.

7. Body Protector (For Coaches or Heavy Sparring)

Not essential for all beginners, but body protectors are helpful for those doing lots of pad holding or intense body shot sparring. They shield the torso from punches and kicks.
