How to Choose the Right Headgear Size

Whether you are just starting with kickboxing or have been training for years, a good headgear is essential. It protects you from strikes, reduces impact, and lowers the risk of injuries such as headaches, bruises, or even concussions. But how do you know which headgear size fits you best? In this article, we explain exactly what to look for when choosing the right size and fit.

1. Why is the right size so important?

A properly fitting headgear:

  • fits securely without causing pressure
  • stays in place during movement
  • hardly restricts your vision
  • feels comfortable during longer training sessions

Headgear that is too large can shift or block your view, while headgear that is too small may cause discomfort or headaches.

2. Measuring your head circumference: the first step

To determine your size, you only need a flexible measuring tape. Measure your head circumference as follows:

  1. Place the measuring tape about 1 cm above your eyebrows.
  2. Wrap it around your head, passing over the ears.
  3. Read the measurement in centimeters.

Write down the result and compare it with the size chart of the manufacturer. Most brands use the following guideline:

Head circumference (cm) Headgear size
50 – 54 cm S (Small)
55 – 58 cm M (Medium)
59 – 62 cm L (Large)
63+ cm XL (Extra Large)

Note: sizes may vary slightly between brands. Always check the size chart on the product page.

3. Fit and adjustment

Besides size, the overall fit is equally important. Pay attention to the following points:

  • Adjustable closures such as Velcro or buckles for a secure fit
  • A chin strap that closes firmly without rubbing
  • Thick padding for protection without limiting vision or mobility
  • A clear field of vision to the front, sides, and downward

4. Headgear for kids vs adults

For children, there are special junior sizes or models with a narrower fit. When choosing headgear for kids, make sure it is highly adjustable so it can grow along with the child.

5. Try it on if possible

If you have the opportunity to try on headgear, do so while wearing a mouthguard. Move around, throw a few light punches, and bounce slightly to check whether the headgear stays firmly in place.

6. Unsure between two sizes?

If you are between two sizes, it is usually best to choose the smaller one. Headgear often becomes slightly more flexible with use, while a loose fit is difficult to correct later on.

Final thoughts: comfort and safety

The right headgear size not only improves safety but also makes your training more comfortable and effective. Take the time to measure your head correctly and compare size charts carefully.
