What do you need boxing gloves for?
Boxing gloves are used for various combat sports, such as boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai. The type of sport and training determines which boxing gloves you should choose. Heavy bag gloves are ideal for training on a heavy bag, while sparring gloves are better for partner training.
What should you look for when buying?
When buying boxing gloves, there are several important factors to keep in mind:
- Weight: Boxing gloves vary in weight, usually between 8 oz and 16 oz. Lighter gloves (8-10 oz) are suitable for competition and speed, providing the damage and KOs you want to see in a fight. While heavier gloves (14-16 oz) are better for sparring and training, as they provide extra protection for you and your training partners.
- Fit: Make sure the gloves fit properly to protect your hands and wrists. Your finger shouldn't fit between them, but a pencil should be able to fit. This way they're not too tight but also not too loose.
- Material: Leather boxing gloves are durable and offer better quality, while synthetic materials are more affordable.
- Closure: Velcro closures are convenient for training, while laces provide a tighter fit for competitions.
What materials are available?
Boxing gloves are typically made from three materials:
- Leather: Offers the best durability and comfort. Natural leather gloves last long, even with intensive use.
- Microfiber/semi-leather: Light and durable, but usually less wear-resistant than real leather.
- Synthetic leather (PU): Cheaper than leather and a good choice for beginners or recreational boxers.
If you have questions about the different materials, feel free to contact our customer service.
Boxing gloves size
The size of boxing gloves is usually expressed in ounces (oz). The larger the weight of the glove, the more padding it has:
- 8-10 oz: Used for competitions or for children to train with.
- 12-14 oz: Ideal for regular training.
- 16 oz and more: Best for sparring and extra hand protection.
General size overview:
- < 38 kg = 8 oz
- 38 - 55 kg = 10 oz
- 55 - 65 kg = 12 oz
- 65 - 74 kg = 14 oz
- > 74 kg = 16 oz
Cheap boxing gloves
One of the cheapest boxing gloves in our range are Sanabul Essential boxing gloves, priced at only €33.95. These gloves are ideal for beginners or people just starting with boxing who don't want to make a big investment. They're affordable because they're made from synthetic leather, which is less durable than real leather, but performs well for basic training. They feature gel padding which makes them comfortable for the knuckles of a beginning fighter.
Alternative: For those looking for more durability and comfort, we recommend the Flow Fightgear Progress boxing gloves. These gloves are made from real leather and offer better protection and longer lifespan (1-2 years longer). These gloves do need a short 'break-in' period, meaning you need to break them in. Once broken in, these types of gloves mold to your fist and fit more comfortably. A perfect pair of gloves for bag training.
Kickboxing gloves
What are kickboxing gloves?
Kickboxing gloves are specially designed for the intensive nature of kickboxing, where both hands and legs are used. They provide extra protection around the back of the hand to prevent injuries when blocking kicks.
Difference between boxing gloves and kickboxing gloves
While they look very similar at first glance, kickboxing gloves often have a more flexible wrist and are slightly lighter, making them faster for kick combinations. Boxing gloves, on the other hand, usually provide firmer wrist support and more padding over the knuckles because boxing involves relatively more punching.

Good boxing gloves
What are good boxing gloves?
Good boxing gloves provide not only protection, but also comfort, durability, and a secure closure. They are made from high-quality materials like leather and have a good fit to protect the wrist.
Which boxing gloves do we recommend?
- For men: Flow Challenge, Hayabusa T3, Fairtex BGV1 or Primo Emblem 2.0
- For women: Sanabul Hyperstrike
- For children: Danger PU kids, Sanabul Sticker bomb, Hayabusa S4 kids
Boxing gloves for men
Boxing gloves for men are usually heavier. These gloves range from 10 oz to 16 oz and are designed to protect hands well during heavy training or sparring sessions. View our range of men's boxing gloves here.
Boxing gloves for women
Women's boxing gloves generally differ only in size, not from men's boxing gloves. With a few exceptions, for example the Sanabul Hyperstrike. These are specially made for women's hands. They are narrower and more compact, making them fit better on women's hands and wrists. View our range of women's boxing gloves here.
Boxing gloves for children
Children need special boxing gloves that are adapted to their smaller hands and lighter weight. Good gloves for children provide protection without being too heavy, usually ranging from 6 oz to 10 oz. View our range of children's boxing gloves here.

What's the difference between sparring and heavy bag gloves?
Sparring gloves have more padding to protect the opponent, while heavy bag gloves are lighter. Sparring gloves absorb more impact to prevent injuries.
What do you wear under boxing gloves?
Hand wraps or inner gloves for extra hand protection and sweat absorption. Hand wraps and inner gloves are good choices.
How tight should a boxing glove fit?
