The jab is one of the most important punches in boxing and kickboxing. It seems simple: a straight punch with your lead hand. Yet the quality of your jab plays a major role in how easily you control distance, set up combinations and put pressure on your opponent.

A good jab does not always have to be powerful. Speed, timing, accuracy and bringing your hand straight back are at least as important.

Want to improve your jab? Start with better execution rather than hitting harder.

What is a jab?

The jab is a straight punch with your lead hand.

Do you stand orthodox, with your left leg in front? Then you jab with your left hand. In a southpaw stance, your right hand is your lead hand.

Among other things, the jab is used to:

  • judge distance;
  • keep your opponent occupied;
  • open combinations;
  • disrupt your opponent’s vision;
  • stop attacks;
  • set up other punches;
  • score points.

That is why you use the jab in almost every boxing session.

Start with a good boxing stance

A good jab starts with your stance.

You need to stand firmly while being able to move immediately.

Pay attention to:

  • slightly bent knees;
  • hands by your head;
  • chin slightly tucked;
  • elbows relatively close to your body;
  • weight distributed between both legs;
  • relaxed shoulders.

Do not keep your whole body tense all the time.

The more unnecessary tension you hold, the harder it becomes to punch quickly.

Punch straight forwards

The jab should travel towards the target as directly as possible.

Do not make a large outward movement before throwing the punch. This makes your jab slower and easier to spot.

From your guard, your fist moves straight towards the target.

The same hand then returns immediately to your head along a short path.

Think:

out → contact → straight back.

Not:

wind up → punch → leave your hand out → return.

Keep your elbow behind the punch

Do not let your elbow point far outwards during the jab.

If your elbow moves sideways first, your opponent sees the punch coming sooner.

The movement also becomes less efficient.

Keep your elbow behind your fist as much as possible at the start of the movement.

Your arm then extends straight towards the target.

Rotate your fist at the end of the punch

Your forearm rotates slightly during the jab.

You do not need to exaggerate this movement.
