Which Protective Gear Is Mandatory in Kickboxing Matches?

Kickboxing is an explosive and physical sport where safety is crucial. While fighters already wear protective gear during training, official competitions follow strict rules regarding mandatory protection. These rules may vary slightly between organizations such as Enfusion, GLORY, WAKO or national authorities. In this article, we explain exactly which protective gear is mandatory in kickboxing matches and why.

1. Mouthguard

Mandatory for all fighters, both amateurs and professionals

A high-quality mouthguard protects not only the teeth, but also the jaw and even helps reduce the risk of concussion by absorbing impact. While boil-and-bite mouthguards are common, a custom-fitted mouthguard offers the highest level of protection.

2. Groin Guard

Mandatory for both men and women

A groin guard is essential to protect against accidental kicks or knees. Men usually wear a hard cup, while women often use specially designed pelvic protectors. Wearing a groin guard is mandatory in almost all competition classes.

3. Shin Guards

Mandatory for youth and recreational matches

Shin guards protect the shins and instep against powerful kicks and blocks. They are mandatory for youth fighters and recreational bouts. In higher classes (C, B and A class), fighters usually compete without shin guards, although regulations can differ by country and organization.

4. Headgear

Mandatory for youth and often required in amateur divisions

Headgear helps reduce the risk of cuts, bruises and head injuries. It is typically mandatory in youth competitions and recreational fights. Professional bouts usually do not allow headgear.

5. Kickboxing Gloves

Mandatory for all competitors

Kickboxing gloves are, of course, required. The glove weight (for example 8 oz or 10 oz) depends on the weight class, competition rules and fighter level. Amateurs and heavier weight classes often use heavier gloves for added safety. In kickboxing events, gloves are usually provided by the event promoter.

6. Ankle Guards

Not always mandatory, optional in many competitions

Ankle guards provide additional support and help prevent abrasions. While they are not always required, many fighters choose to wear them as a preventive measure.

7. Hand Wrapping or Taping

Usually mandatory

Wrapping or taping the hands helps reduce the risk of fractures and provides extra protection for the knuckles. In most competitions, this is mandatory. Exceptions are rare and usually require explicit approval from the organization.

Important: Rules May Vary by Organization

The exact requirements can differ depending on the kickboxing federation and country. Always check the official regulations of the organization you are competing under. If in doubt, consult your trainer or the event organizer.
